Charities
In January 2010, the whole school took part in a huge fundraising drive in response to the tragedy of the Haiti Earthquake. In the Senior School the Year 10s organised a Hoodies for Haiti day on Friday 29th when everyone came in wearing “hoodies” over their school uniform and they each donated over a £1 and many gave considerably more. During the week, Harrisons, the School caterers, donated all the proceeds from the sale of hot chocolate which came to over £260. Meanwhile the Upper Juniors raised about £300 by wearing colourful socks, ribbon, hats, tights and wristbands at their Cross Country event. In total over £2000 was raised and the money goes to the Disaster Emergency Committee.
Since the beginning of the academic year 2009/10 the school has undertaken several other charitable activities. The Senior School Council organised for every tutor group to prepare a Christmas Gift Hamper for the Salvation Army to distribute in the local community. They concentrated on collecting items for families, especially teenagers. The numbers of hampers collected was well up on last year and Kay McCormack from the local Salvation Army headquarters came personally to receive them. She said that there are always more families in need than they have hampers for. We hope to do this again next year.
At the end of March 2010, we look forward to the fun activities and games associated with the Sixth Form Charity week. This year the charities they have chosen to support are the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution).
The Upper Junior School is proposing to collect for the Samaritans Purse Christmas boxes again this year. They will also be fundraising for Tribes Alive.
Year 4 children have been making gowns for the Blue Peter Operation Smile appeal. They are currently on display outside the Upper Junior head’s office.
